The 17-year cicadas are on the way! Brood X (broods are identified by Roman numerals) is the largest emergence of cicadas in the United States-- both in terms of the sheer numbers of cicadas, as well as the number of states in the U.S. that get to witness this "miracle" every 17 years!
Brood X of the 17-year cicadas will inundate at least a portion of each of these states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan
Southern states can expect to see the cicadas emerge in either late April or early May; in the north, it's late May to early June.
If you don't live in a state that typically "hosts" these special and unique visitors, or if you don't live in a part of the state that gets to witness this amazing occurrence, don't worry! The cicadas are generally around for a couple of weeks, so you'll have some time to plan an excursion. It's quite the spectacle and definitely worth seeing!
