CICADA BLOG: See Any Holes?

Updated: Apr 27

The holes are here! Many people in the mid-Atlantic DMV (Washington, DC; Maryland; and Virginia) are already seeing these holes in the ground. The cicadas dig their way up, creating tunnels to the surface, and then head back down until they are ready to emerge. So, wherever you see a hole, you'll eventually see a cicada emergence.

The cicadas finally come out when the ground temperature reaches 64 degrees, and typically (but not always) that occurs after the air temperature is at least 80 degrees for one or two days. You'll see the cicadas emerge in the early evening, so start checking now

for those holes, and then take a look every night. Your visitors will be here soon!
